The lost art of driving a manual, will be replaced by the lost art of driving.

people can't be bothered to pay attention to the road, so they don't deserve to drive.

so they don't deserve to drive.

Somehow my brain read this as "...so they deserve to die."

Hmmm....30y is kind of a short timeframe for driverless camrys and corollas. The tech itself might be ready, but the first prototypes will not be cost effective by then. We also have to untangle the legal hurdles facing driverless car tech (and they WILL be untangled with billions in campaign money on tap, just not immediately)

I think 50-100y is a better time frame for complete market saturation. I also think it will be more of a plurality; there will be a certain contingent of folks who simply won't be cool with a computer calling all the shots, no matter the level of convenience. It also might never achieve true price parity with human driven cars, even if after we get a driverless camry at an affordable price.

I'm not gonna lie, I would love a self driving car as a second car. I mean I love driving when it's something I want to do, but when I have to it can be tedious and frustrating. If I could have a self driving van with a couch, I'd be good.

My 8 year old has crazy ideas from time to time. Once she came up with the idea of tinted glass for cars that goes to normal when it is not sunny out, like some seeing glasses. I told her to run with that idea. She was probably 5 or 6 at the time.

A few weeks back her and I were out to lunch. As we are parking, she says "Wouldn't it be awesome if you could just get in your car and tell it where you wanted to go? Then you wouldn't have to be bothered with driving." I cringed and told her that was a horrible idea, but that some people are working on it.
We then discussed/debated it. Her argument was that you could do other things like eat, read, nap (on long trips) or whatever. My argument was that it was a horrible idea because driving is freedom. It is relaxing. It is cathartic and therapeutic.

It ended with me telling her that maybe it would be okay on small commutes, but for her to just wait until I take her for a spirited ride once I get a fun car again. Or even better once she starts driving. Hopefully she will then see things my way.

Because she got into an "old" model of a car and forgot what to do.

For emergency, in case the computer decides it doesn't want to listen to you anymore, or gets hacked.

But she has not experienced a fun drive just for drivings sake just yet. Maybe after she begins driving, and she still has that attitude, then the shunning will begin. LOL

Imagine the wild new interior configurations and seating arrangements of a driverless car. They could be cool from a design standpoint, but definitely not for me.

I had a thought the other day. How will driverless cars react to things like crossing guards or school buses that randomly put out stop signs? Cause I saw a crossing guard the other day walking down the sidewalk with the stop sign clearly visible though she was not at a crosswalk. Would a driverless car come to a panic stop? Could driverless cars be tricked by pranksters adding/removing street signs?
